Lorne St. Kindergarten is now officially open!
The kindergarten teacher is Felicity and the assistant is Cathy.
Kindergarten hours are 8.30am to 1.30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Complaints & Grievances Policy

Positive, clear and effective processes for resolving grievances between the school and community members assists in the building of strong relationships, dispels anxiety, and ultimately provides students with an enhanced learning environment.

eSmart Policy

Fawkner Primary School recognises the importance of Information Communication Technology in preparing students for the world around them and believes ICT is an integral part of the curriculum. We want our students to be confident and safe using this technology.

Bullying Policy

Fawkner Primary School will provide a positive, safe and supportive environment, where all community members are treated with respect. The school will not tolerate bullying or harassment in any form. Staff, parents and students will work collaboratively to facilitate learning and growth through a whole school approach to social and emotional wellbeing.

Anaphylaxis Management Policy and Procedures

Fawkner Primary School is committed to supporting the safety and well-being of students at risk of anaphylaxis. In doing so, the school will fully comply with Ministerial Order 706 and the associated Guidelines published and amended by the Department from time to time.

School Charter

Fawkner Primary School is committed to providing safe, secure, supportive and high quality learning and development oppurtunities for every student. Our students can only reach their full educational potential when they feel happy, healthy and safe, and when there is a positive school culture that is fair and respectful to everybody. We aim to provide an education that helps children learn positive educational and life skills, where the children are challenged and encouraged to explore and learn more, where the children learn how to have a direct involvement in their own learning, and where they are encourage to achieve success and to establish positive patterns that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

What our school beliefs are:

  • that all children have the right to a quality education
  • that we have a responsibility to help each child achieve to their maximum potential
  • that education for this generation of children is vastly different to that of previous generations
  • that children learn in different ways
  • that every child is different

School Profile

Fawkner Primary School opened in 1988 at Lorne Street. The school emerged from an amalgamation of Fawkner and Fawkner East Primary Schools and is situated on the site of the former Fawkner East Primary School. We are the local school for all families living in Fawkner North, extending to North Coburg. At present our enrolment is approximately 180. The school has been very active in promotion within the Fawkner community and has a very good reputation among the current community. Our average class size is approximately 22 students per grade, which ensures the children are given the very best education possible.
Over two hectares of grounds provide children with a pleasant and safe environment. The grounds offer a variety of both active and passive play options, including a new, well-planned adventure playground all within the secure bounds of a high fence.

Fawkner Primary School offers a comprehensive education in a safe, secure and happy school climate. The school places special emphasis on the basics of reading,writing and mathematics, as well as offering a wide variety of specialist classes. Each grade has specialist classes in Phys. Ed, Music, Art, Library and Computer. The school has a fully equipped Maths Task Centre and a fully networked Computer Lab which are used on a regular basis by all grades, as well as laptops in each grade which are used as part of our Technology and Accelerated Reader programs. The school has a strong involvement in sport and runs Swimming and Camping programs as well as a morning fitness program called Fun N’ Fitness. The children spend 3 mornings a week doing physical games out in the yard for the first 30 minutes of the day. They then come inside and eat some fruit before settling down to begin the work of the day.
Fawkner Primary places great emphasis on activity-based learning where the children learn by doing. This is particularly so in our Science and Environment programs which the children enjoy immensely.
There is an excellent tone in the school, with very few discipline problems existing. The teachers and children know each other well and hence an excellent working relationship exists. The children get to know each other, and through activities such as Buddies program, and special activities, learn to work together in a co-operative way.Our children are actively involved in learning about the world around them, through active research work but also hands-on experiences. Our various gardening projects around the school, including tending our vegetable patch and gardens are good examples of this. A few years ago we were judged as the Northern Metropolitan Region winner of the School’s Garden Awards, highlighting our interest and success in this area.

The school offers great facilities including new gas heating and evaporative cooling throughout the school and a safe, large, activity-based playground.

In keeping with community expectations we provide carefully planned programs through which individuals can experience success and children are encouraged to do their best at all times. The values of caring and tolerance nurtured in a small school environment have always been maintained.

Our curriculum programs embrace the eight key learning areas. Our previous Charter priorities of English, Maths and Information Technology have ensured these curriculum areas are well catered for and this focus is continued with English and Maths being the priorities of this Charter period. Our school follows the state-wide Early Years and Middle Years initiatives to provide high quality intensive English and Maths work as well as a strong focus on Integrated topics.

Classroom programs are supported by English as a Second Language, Corrective Reading, Reading Recovery, Bridges, Bright Futures and Integration Programs where required. To enhance classroom programs, children also participate in Inter School Sport, Swimming, Camping and Excursion Programs, experience Visiting Artists and Performers, as well as becoming involved in special whole school activity weeks.

As further support we provide children with ready access to a wide variety of maths extension activities, science, language and reading resources, a broad range of audio-visual equipment and a well-appointed library. Our school-wide computer network and networked computer laboratory is providing children with ready access to information technology. Each class has timetabled sessions in the Lab and children and teachers are encouraged to use this excellent facility whenever possible. All classrooms also have networked computers to be used as part of the Integrated program. Internet access is available and is carefully monitored to ensure educational outcomes are achieved.

We believe we offer an excellent all round education where the childrens’ needs are always of paramount importance. The school is dedicated to continuing to provide a quality education for its pupils so that they will become effective members of the community.

We place particular emphasis on the needs of new children, especially our new Preps who are beginning a very daunting phase of their lives. Being a school with a small population but a large area means the Preps have plenty of space to play in and feel comfortable from their first day. We ensure they have friends to play with and older children to help them.

Principal’s Message

Welcome to Fawkner Primary School. Our school is very friendly and welcoming, the staff is extremely dedicated and professional and the children are wonderful. People who visit us always comment on what a great feel there is around the school.

Academically the students are performing extremely well. In the most recent NAPLAN tests our students were well above the state average in all language areas which is tremendously positive, and a credit to all involved with the school. The teachers place special emphasis on learning Language skills (especially reading and comprehension) as well as Numeracy as we recognise that all children need to learn how to read and solve every-day mathematical problems to survive.

We pride ourselves on looking after all children and catering to the needs of all abilities. We are also proud that we are educating our children with 21st century technology. We utilise interactive whiteboards, desktop and laptop computers, video cameras, animation programs etc. to ensure our children are prepared for an ICT rich world. The children use these every day in their classrooms as educational tools that help to motivate and engage them.
